Art picture framing tips

To hang or not to hang? Some prefer salon-style, others just need a wall to lean on, but all of our favorite decorators have distinctive, inspiring approaches.

"Grand old oil paintings often look great out of their frames."
—Allegra Hicks

Rita Konig displays family photos and snapshots on walls (never "on the piano").

According to Miles Redd, you should frame art "however the picture dictates, but I love French mats."

against the olsens

PETA has launched a new campaign against the Olsens.

The animal rights group has launched an all-out attack on the tiny twins, who have been photographed wearing fur and have included fur in their fashion lines.

“Fur Is Worn by Beautiful Animals and Ugly People,” reads a new PETA ad to run in magazines.

The org released a statement saying, “No one would argue that Mary-Kate and Ashley could use some meat on their bones, but the last thing they need is hair on their backs.”

PETA has gone so far as to dub Mary-Kate and Ashley “Hairy-Kate” and “Trashley.”
They’ve even started a website against the “Trollsen Twins” and are selling merch!

Nicole Richie's chanel purse

Talk about a yummy mummy! I am loving Nicole Richie’s look in these photos, especially the way she pulls off the all-black ensemble with a fierce pop of red courtesy of one very fabulous quilted leather Chanel purse with the chain and leather strap.

This has been a must-have handbag for a while now, but I never get tired of seeing it, esepecially when it’s used to counteract a modern, edgier ensemble. Bonus: Red bags are totally hot right now - they’re a great way to add color without dressing like The Joker.

The 20 Richest Women In Entertainment

Lea Goldman and Kiri Blakeley 01.18.07, 6:00 AM ET
These days, just about any lip-smacking starlet can land a cable reality show or become YouTube's flavor of the week. But fame's 15 fleeting minutes can elapse quicker than it takes to refresh a Web page. Only a bona fide superstar can parlay a moment's stardom into a long and lucrative career. And even that's not enough to land a coveted spot on our first-ever listing of the 20 Richest Women in Entertainment. For that, you'd need a minimum net worth of $45 million.

To compile the list, we scoured the music, television, film and publishing industries to determine which female celebrities have, over the course of their careers, amassed the greatest fortunes in entertainment. We ruled out non-working celebs who essentially live off royalties (Barbra Streisand, for example), and we also excluded "old Hollywood" types like Elizabeth Taylor. The list is entirely confined to today's active megastars.
In Pictures: The 20 Richest Women In Entertainment
Of course, the celebrities with the longest careers proved the most daunting to evaluate. Since beginning her career in the early 1980s, Madonna has sold some 200 million albums worldwide and starred in a string of largely disappointing films. She owns an impressive portfolio of properties and briefly ran her own record label, Maverick, a part of Warner Music Group. Our estimate of her net worth--$325 million--is definitely on the conservative side.
Indeed, most of the women on our list cull their earnings from multimedia enterprises. Jennifer Lopez, for example, boasts valuable perfume and fashion lines in addition to her film and music careers; Harry Potter scribe J.K. Rowling now enjoys millions of dollars in royalties and merchandising revenues from the incredibly successful film adaptations of her books; and supermodel Gisele Bundchen, a fixture of Victoria's Secret catalogs, earned her $70 million fortune not just from modeling, but also from a line of successful sandals sold in Brazil.

The youngest women on the list? Twenty-year-old twins and former child stars Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who have converted their supporting roles on a middling 1980s sitcom into a multimillion dollar retail empire called Dualstar Entertainment. The twins are often credited in the media as presiding over a fortune of as much as $1 billion. Not so. Despite Dualstar's retail sales of $1 billion, the waifish mini-moguls don't pocket all of it. We estimate their combined net worth at around $100 million.
Britney Spears, 25, also makes the list, despite a relatively brief career that took off only in 1999 with the release of her hit single "...Baby One More Time." Her $100 million fortune was earned largely from music--she has sold over 75 million albums to date--but she has supplemented her income with a profitable line of perfumes and multimillion-dollar endorsement deals.
The richest actress on the list is Julia Roberts, who built her estimated $140 million fortune film by film. The Pretty Woman star was the first actress in Hollywood to command a $20 million-per-film paycheck, a fairly common salary for male superstars like Will Smith and Johnny Depp. Other actresses who make the list largely due to their film fees are Nicole Kidman and Cameron Diaz. Sandra Bullock, who checks in at No. 14 on the list, supplemented movie earnings by producing the ABC sitcom The George Lopez Show, which went into syndication last year.
Martha Stewart is the only woman on the list whose net worth fluctuates just about every second. Her nearly $650 million fortune is based almost entirely on the 28 million shares she owns in Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (nyse: MSO - news - people ). (In 2005, that stake was worth $1 billion.) Though her brief stint in prison forced her to relinquish the chief executive title, she still collects upwards of $2 million a year in salary and bonuses from the firm.
Forbes' list of the 20 Richest Women in Entertainment is the subject of a one-hour special slated to air on the E! Entertainment Channel on Jan. 20. Check your local listings.
In Pictures: The 20 Richest Women In Entertainment
Methodology: Net worth estimates were arrived at by tallying the total earnings, including salaries, record sales, tours, merchandising and royalties over the course of a career. When relevant, we included real estate holdings, shares and other assets. A conservative rate of return was applied, less taxes and agent fees. The list is limited to those female celebrities active in their professional lives.

World's Most Extravagant Handbags

from http://www.forbes.com/

It's never too early to start thinking about your holiday wish list.

Sure to top it this year? Chanel's "Diamond Forever" tote (pictured left). In December, the company will debut 13 of these diamond and alligator handbags just in time for the holiday shopping crunch. Each is a stepped-up version of the classic Chanel shoulder bag, with the iconic Chanel "Cs" encrusted in a staggering 334 diamonds (a total of 3.56 carats) set in 18-carat white gold. The alligator skin is farmed and treated with a matte finish.

The total cost: $260,150.

While few may actually end up owning this bag, the demand for other high-end handbags has skyrocketed. Online retailer eluxury.com saw sales of luxury handbags (those over $500) increase 11% last year.

"People want to spend their money on frivolous things," says Pamela Danziger, author of Why People Buy Things They Don't Need and founder of luxury goods research company Unity Marketing. "[And] handbags definitely fall into that category."
Scarcity is also driving desire for these totes. Something that is hard to obtain or impossible to find will be more valuable, says Meaghan Mahoney, editor of the daily news and handbag review online site purseblog.com.

"A handbag [such as] the Chanel Diamond Forever bag is more of a collector's item than something you use on a daily basis," she says. "Like an exquisite car or a rare painting, it's the limited availability and high demand that make this handbag more valuable."

Though Chanel's treasure may be the costliest handbag on the market, there are others that are just as costly, some dripping with diamonds, others crafted from animal skin.

A Purse Is Worth A Thousand Words
Take the Birkin by Hermes, a brand synonymous with luxury. This bag, inspired by French actress Jane Birkin, can fetch between $6,000 and $15,000, depending on what grade of leather or exotic skin it is made of.

But it is as nothing compared to its more exotic sister, the Crocodile Birkin. Price: $120,000. What makes this bag so expensive is not just the leather used but also the 10 carats of diamonds set in white gold and placed on its clasp. There are only two such bags available for purchase in the world

Bejeweled Bags
Accessorizing handbags with precious stones is not uncommon. The Leiber "Precious Rose bag incorporates 1,016 diamonds, 1,169 pink sapphires and 800 pink tourmalines, all set in 18-carat white gold. Cost: $92,000.
The Lana Marks Cleopatra Clutch in alligator ($100,000) comes accessorized with 1,500 fully cut and faceted black-and-white round diamonds that line the top of the handbag. Only five such clutches are made each year. In Hollywood during awards season the designer makes a limited-edition Cleopatra for only one actress. Two have won Academy Awards while in possession: Charlize Theron in 2004 and this year Helen Mirren, who carried hers right up to the podium.
Rare Skins
When it comes to alligator, ostrich or snakeskin, handbag designers go to extreme lengths to find the rarest. Santiago Gonzalez, chief executive of Nancy Gonzalez handbags, has traveled from the Australian Outback to Hong Kong to find skins that seldom come to market.
"What people don’t understand," he says, "is that it takes a certain amount of area on the skin to make a bag. If the lizard is too small, then you have to use more of it."
Quality also determines price. The Nancy Gonzalez Porousus Bag, made with rare lizard skin, costs $30,000. Designer Devi Kroell uses alligator skins whose scales are similar in size--a rare phenomenon--to create a bag priced at $29,000. Judith Leiber's canary yellow handbag in alligator ($17,000) likewise uses skin with similar-sized scales.
Try saying that three times.

What with animal rights activists up in arms over fashionistas in fur, might we not soon see the day when lizard lovers will be pressured to not buy bags that once swam or slithered?

“As much you would think there would be a huge backlash, there won't be,” says Danziger. “It goes back to the basic rule of supply and demand. The more rare and scarce something is, the more people want it. In the case of overly expensive handbags, people will still covet them because it's an uncommon find.”

Bottega Veneta Wedge Shoulder Bag

I’m not really a messenger bag sort of gal, but I’ll gladly make an exception if it means carrying something as luxurious and well-crafted as this Bottega Veneta Wedge Shoulder Bag.

Its khaki color is noncommittal, so it’s the perfect choice for men and women alike - and it goes the extra mile by providing ample room and a secure closure system that’s reliable without being cumbersome. With the hefty, valuable items we all tend to carry today, this type of feature is just so important. On top of it all, it’s the epitome of style. Who can resist that gorgeous woven leather?

HOW TO FIT: Paperbag-Waist Skirts

There's a lot of extra fabric around the middle here, so wear these skirts with the belt tied snugly around the top part of your hips and pair them with a softly fitted, tucked-in blouse—it'll define your midriff and give you a flattering shape.
